Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewit said the aim was to find out just how free New Zealanders and Australians are in bed.

“We used another sliding scale to see how sexually repressed or sexually open-minded people think New Zealanders are. Respondents from both countries believed they sat in the middle,” she said.

New Zealanders think New Zealanders are more open minded sexually than repressed. (57.9 on the scale on average). They also think Australians are more sexually open minded than New Zealanders giving them 60.8 on the scale.

In return, Australians think New Zealanders are more sexually open minded than New Zealanders do themselves, giving them 60.3 on the scale. Australians consider themselves to be relatively sexually open minded, giving themselves an average of 64.1 on the scale.

Sophie McGrath says being sexually open-minded can mean being open to trying new things and feeling free to experiment and talk about sex. “But being sexually open-minded doesn’t mean doing things you don’t want to do – it’s about ensuring your needs are met no matter what those needs are.”

The survey found 44% of Aussies like to try new things in the bedroom, compared with 40% of Kiwis.  Aussie men are the most likely to try new things, at 51% while 49% of kiwi men want to experiment.

Kiwi women are least likely to want to try new things in the bedroom, with only 32% saying they like to experiment, 37% of Australian women said the same.

Gen Z are the most sexually adventurous in the bedroom with 68% saying they like to try new things. Baby boomers (28%) and silent generation (23%) are least likely to want to experiment and try new things.

Sex drive impacts the desire to experiment and 30% of New Zealanders and Australians said they don’t have a high sex drive. They are more likely to be women. Australians (25%) are slightly more likely than New Zealanders (23%) to enjoy experimenting with sex toys during sex. Aussie men (27%) like sex toy experimentation more than New Zealand men (23%).

The younger generations enjoy experimenting with sex toys more than older generations. Gen Z enjoys experimenting with sex toys during sex more than any other gen (38%). Followed by Gen Y at 34%, Gen X at 27%, Baby boomers at 15%, and the Silent Generation at 7%.

Perspectives on adult toys are shifting in both countries with 47% of respondents saying they believe sex toys are becoming more mainstream. Women (49%) are slightly more likely to agree than men (45%). They are more likely to be Gen Z (66%), Y (61%) or X (50%) and less likely to be Baby Boomers (32%) or Silent Gen (21%).
